Have you ever heard of the Oranges? It was a nickname for Generation X in the 1990s. Since then, they have been identified as the children of wealthy families who lived together in Apgujeong, Gangnam. But why were they called the Oranges?
This is because oranges were an expensive and rare imported fruit at the time. Imported fruit was not common in the 90s. Oranges are rare because they are not cultivated in Korea. To eat these precious oranges properly, you need to take care of the type and grade.
Chapter 1
Aren't they all the same oranges?
Just as there are many types of tangerines, such as Hallabong and Cheon Hye-hyang, there are also different types of oranges. There are two types, Valencia oranges (pictured left) and Navel oranges (pictured right). You can tell them apart by looking at the bottom part of the orange.
Valencia oranges are the most grown oranges in the world. The bottom part is dotted. It is mainly used to make drinks because it has a lot of juice.
On the other hand, navel oranges are oranges with a navel-shaped bottom. It is also named after the shape of the navel. It is mainly an orange for fresh fruit sold in supermarkets. It has no seeds and has a high sugar content, so it tastes good. Also, it has a lot of vitamin C. 60 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of pulp. (Valencia oranges contain 40mg of vitamin C per 100g of flesh)
Chapter 2
Oranges have grades too?
Have you ever seen the black sticker (black label) on an orange? It is a sticker that is applied only to oranges that are 12 Brix* or higher after going through a sugar content selection process. Sweetness is guaranteed. According to the sugar content, it is black, blue, green, and white.
On the other hand, there are also cases where oranges have a four-digit number sticker on them. There are three numbers: 4012 (large), 3017 (medium), and 4103 (small). It's the size of an orange. Oranges do not taste different depending on their size. However, it is said that the weight of the orange is better when squeezed, or the taste is better when the peel is thick and smooth.
* Brix : A unit for determining the concentration of sugar in a liquid, such as fruit or wine
Chapter3
How to peel easily
When eating an orange, the process of peeling it is often a concern. Unlike tangerines, oranges have a thick and hard skin, making it difficult to peel them by hand. Many people end up cutting them with a knife or another tool, but even when peeled by hand, the stems of the orange peel can get caught under the nails, causing inconvenience.오
Here is a tip for easily peeling an orange.
#1 Use the disposable knife that comes with delivery food
The disposable mini knife that comes with orders of delivery food, such as tteokbokki, can be a handy tool for peeling oranges. It is less dangerous than a sharp knife and easy to carry around. You can cut the orange while gently pressing the skin with your hand to make it easier for the knife to enter.

#2 Roll left and right and open with bare hands
This is a method of separating the orange peel and the flesh. Place the orange on a flat surface and roll it in all directions for about 20 seconds. As you roll the orange, you will notice a sour aroma coming from the fruit. This is due to the release of ethylene, which helps to ripen the oranges and increase their sugar content.
After rolling, you should see a gap between the peel and the flesh of the orange. You can then easily peel it by hand, just like a tangerine.

Chapter4
Let's eat it in different ways
Oranges are a versatile fruit that can be eaten in many ways. They are great for making a sweet syrup called Cheong, and they can also be dried and enjoyed as a snack. Today, I will share a cooking tip that makes use of 200% of the orange.
#1 Making Orange Chips
Slice an orange and place it in an air fryer or a food dehydrator. Dry for 30 minutes at 70 degrees Celsius in an air fryer or 14 hours at 70 degrees Celsius in a dehydrator. Then, you can store them in a clean glass container. Orange chips can be dipped in melted chocolate and eaten as cookies or used as toppings for cakes.
#2 Making Homemade Orange Jam
Start by removing the skin and bitter white pith from the orange flesh. Crush the pulp to extract the juice. Mix the fruit juice and sugar in equal parts and let it sit at room temperature for around 20 minutes. Next, transfer the mixture into a glass container and add around 100g of sugar. Before sealing the container, add more sugar to prevent mold. Let the mixture age at room temperature for two days, then refrigerate for up to five days. The resulting jam can be used as a spread on toast or added to various recipes.
#3 Juice Making
Similar to making homemade syrup, you only need to use the pulp for making juice. To make the juice, take one standard orange with the inner skin removed, along with 7 ice cubes in about 100ml of water, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Simply blend everything together in a blender. If you want to make Ade, you can replace water with carbonated water.
"You are what you eat"
(Brillat savarin, French gourmet)
Your thoughts and body shape can change based on what you eat, and your mood can fluctuate throughout the day. You have to choose what you eat based on how you want to feel. What you eat shapes who you are. The same goes for fruit. All fruits are good for your health, but oranges are particularly rich in vitamin C and can be effective for skin care and anti-cancer effects.
