This year, cherry blossoms are blooming earlier than usual, as the high temperature and long sunlight hours have pushed the blooming period eight days forward. With the lifting of COVID-19 social distancing measures and mandatory mask-wearing, we can enjoy the cherry blossoms more freely.

On average, you can see spring flowers for about two weeks. Each flower has a different blooming period. Except for the Camellia, which can only be seen on Jeju Island, you can first meet the plum blossom. Did you know that there are many different types of cherry blossoms? They are divided into four types: "double-flowered cherry blossom", "mountain cherry blossom", "wild cherry blossom", and "weeping cherry blossom".

#1 The "double-flowered cherry blossom" is a variety that was developed in Japan and is weak to cold, so it blooms more in the southern region than in the central region. It can be seen a lot in Gyeongju and Daegu. It is called "double-flowered cherry blossom" because it has many layers of petals.

#2 The "mountain cherry blossom" is a variety native to Korea and is the most commonly seen type in the country. Although it is called "mountain" cherry blossom, it is not actually bigger than the double-flowered cherry blossom. The mountain cherry blossom blooms the earliest among cherry blossoms in Korea.

#3 The "wild cherry blossom" is a cherry blossom that grows on mountains and hillsides. It is a type of cherry blossom that has been growing naturally in Japan since ancient times. Unlike the other cherry blossoms, it has small, white flowers with a light scent.

#4 The "weeping cherry blossom" is a cherry blossom with drooping branches that can grow up to 15 meters long. It is often seen near rivers and ponds, and is known for its majestic appearance. Its flowers are similar to those of the mountain cherry blossom, but the branches are more flexible and droop down.

There may be some people who want to grind cherry blossoms and plum blossoms. It's hard to tell from a distance. Plum blossoms are characterized by very short flower heads. It's almost stuck to the branches. Also, the number of flowers is smaller than that of cherry blossoms.
